The following is a snapshot of developments in the Philippines’ presidential election campaign ahead of voting on Monday.
Opposition senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino leads opinion polls by more than 20 percentage points, followed by former president Joseph “Erap” Estrada who has edged out businessman senator Manuel “Manny” Villar, who dropped to third place. Administration candidate Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro is a distant fourth, with the other five official candidates registering minimal support. The source of each report is in brackets, unless it is Reuters. The Supreme Court threw out on Friday several petitions to postpone the presidential election and scrap the new automated system in favor of the manual counting of votes. Spokesman Jose Midas Marquez said the court found there was no abuse of discretion on the part of the elections commission to push ahead with balloting on May 10 despite possible delays in the voting and counting processes.
