One person was missing on Wednesday after a fire at an historic hotel in Harrogate which police said was “potentially suspicious.”
Much of the roof and top floor of the 170-bedroom Victorian hotel in the center of the Yorkshire spa town was destroyed in the blaze which broke out in the early hours of Wednesday and was still continuing by mid-day. “It is one of the largest property fires we have had to deal with for a number of years,” said a spokesman for North Yorkshire fire brigade. “The hotel is a great landmark in the town.” More than a 100 firefighters, including firemen from neighboring counties, attended the blaze, which is believed to have started on the top floor. About 130 guests and 25 members of staff were evacuated, but one male employee remains unaccounted for. “Firefighters are working hard to bring the fire under control and limit the damage where possible,” the fire spokesman added. Police said it was too early to determine its cause, but an investigation was under way.
