Don’t forget eye examinations
Eye pressure, which causes blindness, is the fluid pressure of the aqueous humor inside the eye. Also called glaucoma, the illness can cause blindness if not treated as it can damage the eye’s optic nerve that transmits visual information to the brain. Not showing signs of glaucoma until the disease has progressed significantly, which may happen, but not in all cases, is the worst part of the illness. Therefore, glaucoma can only be diagnosed during a regular eye examination. Simple treatment and regular drug utilization balance intraocular pressure and prevent the illness from progressing.
Make sure you receive the correct medication
You should make sure the medicine your doctor prescribes you and the medicine you receive at the pharmacy are the same because some pharmacies may give you the wrong prescription due to intense work pressure. An incident happened in the southern province of Antalya’s Kumluca district approximately six months ago. A doctor advised parents to give cough syrup to their baby, but a pharmacist accidentally gave a different syrup to the family. The baby was in a coma because of the wrong syrup and was unconscious for approximately two weeks.
Go to the doctor instead of consulting a pharmacy
One of the mistakes Turks make is consulting pharmacies or to take painkillers instead of going to a doctor when they feel sick. However, many experts note that taking painkillers or antibiotics when one does not need them causes ulcers. In addition, after doctors prescribe some medicine to sick people, these ill people continuously buy this medicine from pharmacies even though they are no longer needed. Taking these medicines may cause not only an ulcer but also gastric bleeding, gastritis and diseases that affect the liver and kidney.
Be sure to receive a heart checkup
It is important for people over 40, smokers, people who are stressed or are overweight to have a heart checkup, even though you may think nothing is wrong. Additionally, you can learn your blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, triglyceride and uric acid levels via a simple heart checkup. Sometimes if one is not diagnosed early it may lead to sudden death.
Install a natural gas detector
It is possible to make a quick fix to protect against a possible gas leak, which can lead to deaths. One should buy a gas detector, which senses combustible gas that can lead to serious problems, and place it in one’s home. If combustible gas is detected in the air sample, then there will be an audible alert. This alert is sounded in your home to warn everyone that there is a possible gas leak.
Wear a safety belt
It is a classic warning for many people; however, wearing a safety belt to protect against an accident or sudden stop may save your life. According to research conducted in Turkey, 24.8 percent of people who wore safety belts were not hurt due to traffic accidents.
Anchor furniture to the wall
According to research at Boğaziçi University’s Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, 50 percent of physical injuries due to the 1999 Marmara earthquake, which killed over 17,000 and left thousands homeless, happened due to reasons other than faulty construction (except for concrete columns, girders, load-bearing walls, roofs and the foundations of houses). Therefore, you can eliminate some risk before an earthquake by anchoring household items such as furniture, refrigerators, televisions, painting tables and bookcases to the wall or floor.
