The trial of the suspects involved in the Erzincan branch of Ergenekon will begin in Erzurum on May 4. The specially authorized Erzurum 2nd High Criminal Court sent notices to 14 suspects demanding their attendance at the hearings, including Berk.
So far, Berk has not made any petition or request to the court to excuse his absence from the trial.
Gen. Berk is accused of putting into operation an apparent military plot to undermine the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and certain religious communities in the eastern province of Erzincan. The plot was to frame individuals in certain religious organizations for crimes they did not commit by planting hand grenades and ammunition in their homes and offices. A civilian prosecutor summoned the general twice to give testimony on the issue, but he has yet to comply with the order.
The indictment accuses Gen. Berk of presiding over a meeting during which participants decided to plant weapons and ammunition in the homes of members of certain religious communities, as a result of which the public would start believing that these communities had “terrorist intentions.”
In the meantime, Republican People’s Party (CHP) Erzurum Provincial Chairman Tuncer Aktaş announced that three CHP deputies will come to Erzurum on May 4 to follow the trial.
He said the deputies, who will be led by Artvin deputy Metin Arifağaoğlu, will follow the whole trial, prepare a report and submit it to CHP leader Deniz Baykal.
Other suspects named in the indictment include Erzincan Chief Public Prosecutor İlhan Cihaner, Erzincan Provincial Gendarmerie Regiment Commander Col. Ali Tapan, Eskişehir Provincial Gendarmerie Regiment Commander Col. Recep Gençoğlu, Erzincan Provincial Gendarmerie Intelligence Department Director Nedim Ersan and Erzincan Provincial Gendarmerie Intelligence Department Deputy Director Esin Ergut.
