Two soldiers slain in clash with PKK

29 April 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Two soldiers were killed and two others were injured on Tuesday night in a clash between Turkish security forces and terrorists with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the southeastern province of Hakkari.

The deceased were identified as Spc. Sgt. Erkan Ayaz and Pvt. Selman Özay. The injured soldiers were hospitalized at the military hospital in Hakkari.

The soldiers’ families were devastated at the news of the loss of their sons. Özay’s father Rahim, who resides in Samsun, said his son’s death was God’s will and called on those who do not want this country to achieve peace to be ashamed of themselves.

Ayaz’s family, who lives in Malatya, was devastated by the news of his death. He is survived by a daughter. In the meantime, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan sent a telegram to Chief of General Staff Gen. İlker Başbuğ yesterday offering his condolences for the attack in Hakkari.
