Deputies motion for investigation of suspicious incidents

29 April 2010 / İBRAHIM ASALIOĞLU, ANKARA
In the wake of a series of workshops organized by the government to learn about the problems and needs of Turkey’s Alevi community, a motion has been submitted in Parliament requesting the establishment of an investigatory committee to look into anti-Alevi pogroms and numerous other provocative acts throughout Turkey’s history that have taken the lives of hundreds and seem to have been orchestrated by an invisible hand.

The motion, signed by 115 deputies and submitted to the Presidency of Parliament on Monday, demands the establishment of a parliamentary commission to investigate the unsolved murders. “Whoever has any information or documents [that might help shed light on unsolved murders] should begin preparing now,” said Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Çorum deputy Agah Kafkas, who initiated the petition.

The commission is likely to be formed once Parliament completes discussions on the constitutional amendment package. The first signatures for the motion came from Kafkas and AK Party İstanbul deputies İbrahim Yiğit and Reha Çamuroğlu. The motion garnered 115 signatures within two hours of being filed.

The petition demands a thorough investigation to uncover who masterminded the Karhamanmaraş massacre of 1978, the 1980 incidents in Çorum and the Sivas massacre of 1993, in which Alevis were brutally killed at the hands of agitated mobs.
