The Hidden Riches 2010 conference held on Tuesday had a good level attendance with the representatives of 20 companies from Turkey along with 44 others from Greece, Russia and Romania as well as 90 fund managers taking part. The conference was also supported by Greece’s Piraeus Securities, Piraeus Bank Romania and Russia’s Otkritie Securities.
İş Investment organized this conference for the first time in 2007. It was also held in London last year with the participation of leading financial institutions from Israel, Greece and Romania.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the conference, Turan Erol, a Turkish Airlines (THY) board member, said his company was a focal point for foreign participants due to its success story in recent years. “THY is a very good model to demonstrate Turkey’s potential,” he said.
A majority of the investors’ questions were about the sustainable high growth rates THY has recently achieved, Erol noted. In reply he talked about İstanbul’s favorable geographical position, which means a greater opportunity for aircraft to save fuel.
A portfolio manager at fund management company Griffin, Aziz Ünan also found the opportunity to speak to reporters on the sidelines of the conference. He said Griffin is generally interested in investing in companies that have an effective management structure, transparency and a leading position in their sector. Their ability to create a viable cash flow and their growth potential are other factors that Griffin favor when deciding to fund a company.
Mentioning their plans to establish a portfolio management firm in İstanbul, Ünan argued that the metropolis has the potential to become a global financial center “if it acts swiftly” and works on providing a sound legal infrastructure in the near future and promoting the city’s advantages. For example, he noted, İstanbul is in a much more advantageous position in terms of its time zone, especially when dealing with specific markets such as ones in Asia, when compared to London.
İş Investment General Manager İlhami Koç and Akfen Holding Chairman Hamdi Akın were also among the participants at the conference.
