Anniversary of Chernobyl marked with protests

27 April 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Activists from Greenpeace and residents of Sinop province held a demonstration yesterday -- the 24th anniversary of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster -- denouncing plans for the construction of a nuclear plant in the area.

Nearly a quarter-century after the April 26, 1986 Ukrainian Chernobyl nuclear disaster, activists gathered near Sinop Castle carrying a giant banner reading, “Sinop doesn’t want nuclear!” The protesters oppose a Turkish government plan to build a nuclear power plant in Sinop, which like much of the region has felt the impact of the Chernobyl fallout, which severely affected over 600,000 people in several countries and left a vast area uninhabitable to the present day. There is widespread public opposition to the nuclear plans in the Sinop area, and in solidarity with the protestors, many locals hung black flags from the windows of their homes and businesses yesterday.

Five activists were taken into custody by Sinop police during the protest, Greenpeace announced yesterday.
