An imam once declared to be anti-secular by the military has produced an album of hymns performed by children as part of a project approved by the Directorate of Religious Affairs.

On April 27, 2007, the General Staff issued a memorandum decrying Denizli imam Hasan Koç for his role in organizing an activity for the Directorate of Religious Affairs’ annual Blessed Birth Week, saying, “In the activity, organized jointly by the Denizli Provincial Mufti’s Office and a political party, elementary school students sang religious songs with their heads covered.” It later emerged that the event -- a play involving students in a mosque’s Quran class -- was in fact hosted by the municipality and no political party was involved. Koç was interrogated over the incident by the gendarmerie, and the imam and the mufti’s office were given official demerits over the incident.

The imam has now written an album of songs for children that focus on the principles of the Islamic faith. The album, performed by a group of children known as “Âmin,” was approved by the Religious Affairs Directorate Foundation and is sold by the same organization.
