Turkey offers training to Palestinian police officers

24 April 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Palestinian police officers trained by Turkish police in a variety of areas will establish a unit in Palestine to educate Palestinian police. Turkey has trained 120 motorcycle police officers so far through a joint project of the Turkish Cooperation and Development Agency (TİKA) and the Turkish Police Department. The latest of these officers received their certificates of completion on Friday in the West Bank city of Eriha.

Thirty-one Palestinian police officers received their certificates upon completing their courses led by Yalçın Çınar from the Batman Police Department, Mehmet Karataş from the Elazığ Police Department and Ahmet Yüksel Kınay from the Rize Police Department.

Present at the ceremony, Taşkın Erdin from the Ankara Police Department said this is the fourth training session for Palestinian motorcycle cops and that they will bring 11 trained Palestinian police officers to Turkey for further instruction. Erdin also added that these Palestinian police officers will go on to train their own police forces. Speaking with the Anatolia news agency, Palestinian Police Academy head Sahir al-Sabbah said cooperation between Palestine and Turkey has been stepped up to a larger and more comprehensive level.

Noting that they have benefited immensely from the training, al-Sabbah said they also plan to establish a “dolphin” unit within their own department to prepare Palestinian police officers. The unit will be charged with training and delivering courses to Palestinian police. Ahmet Refik Çetinkaya, TİKA’s Ramallah coordinator, said their support and assistance to Palestinian police forces would continue.
