Minister: Constitutional reform will attract investors

Nihat Ergün
23 April 2010 / ALI ASLAN KILIÇ, ANKARA
Industry and Trade Minister Nihat Ergün has said passage of a constitutional reform package currently being debated in Parliament would be conducive to an atmosphere attractive to domestic and global investors, stressing the close relationship between political stability and the economy.

“From consumers to global investors, all actors in the economy are following these developments closely, for they care about long-lasting stability. Since the implementation of constitutional change will also bring permanence to stability, obstacles in front of economic activities will be removed,” he told Today’s Zaman.

While stating that Turkey is wasting its energy discussing issues that should have already been overcome, Ergün said the approval of the constitutional reform package will end these problems.

Pointing out that the discussions target political stability, which is closely related to the economy, Ergün continued: “In Turkey, there are often discussions affecting political stability. The gravity of the issue comes out when we take a look at the center of these discussions, because most of these discussions revolve around the high judiciary. Discussions such as whether or not Turkey would be subject to a military intervention or a coup do not end. These discussions must not come to the agenda of a country. … These constitutional amendments are a change that can end these discussions to a great extent.”

Ergün also said he cannot understand the criticism of opposition parties, who claim that the country will be hindered by the constitutional package, and stressed that neither low-income individuals nor industrialists find palliative solutions sincere.

“Stability is a situation which enables fast improvement of all problematic areas and quick progress. If you do not make Turkey’s political stability long-lasting, no change that you make to benefit workers, civil servants, farmers, tradesmen, industrialists and exporters would be long-lasting. It is long-lasting stability that enables permanence.”

The minister also added that with the approval of the constitutional reform package, politicians, bureaucrats and members of the judiciary will be able to focus solely on their fields, which, in turn, will positively affect the inflow of international capital.
