Professor says Turkey kept its economy away from global crisis

22 April 2010 / THE ANATOLIA NEWS AGENCY, BURSA
An American economy professor said on Wednesday that Turkey kept itself far away from global economic crisis.

Economist Nouriel Roubini, who predicted global economic crisis earlier, gave a conference within the scope of a series of meetings on Turkish automotive industry in the northwestern province of Bursa. Roubini said that Turkey absorbed well the impact of global economic crisis.

After financial crisis that took place in Turkey in 2001, the banking sector has been strengthened and financial discipline has been secured in the country, he said.

Roubini said Turkey has learned lessons from economic crises and created an economy based on exports.

Economic revival would continue in Turkey within the next years, he added.

Nouriel Roubini is a professor of economics at the Stern School of Business, New York University and chairman of Roubini Global Economics, an economic consultancy firm.

Roubini was born in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1959. The child of Iranian Jewish parents, his family moved to Tehran, Iran, when he was two. He later lived in Israel; from 1962 to 1983 he resided in Italy where he attended Milano Bocconi university; moved to the United States to pursue his business doctorate in international economics at Harvard University.

He is currently a U.S. citizen and speaks English, Persian, Italian, and Hebrew.
