Departure of Estonian president from Turkey delayed due to ash clouds

18 April 2010 / THE ANATOLIA NEWS AGENCY, İSTANBUL
Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves who is on an official trip to Turkey had to prolong his visit.

Departure of Ilves from Turkey was delayed as his flight to Vienna was cancelled due to ash clouds from the volcanic eruption in Iceland.

Over 250 flights from İstanbul, with the addition of flights to destinations like Bucharest, Sarejovo, Skopje, Zaghrep, Belgrad, Prishtina and Moscow were cancelled.

International passengers who were stuck in the Atatürk International Airport as all the hotels in İstanbul were fully booked, had to crash on the floor, empty offices or seats in the airport.

Turkish Airlines announced that it will launch additional flights to make up for the cancelled flights once the airports in those destinations were opened to flights.

It said it already started diverting some of the passengers on cancelled flights to destinations like Madrid, Barcelona, Nice, Otopeni and Simferopol where airports were opened to flights.
