Two police officers died and two others were injured when their police car rolled off the shoulder of a road outside the village of Albayrak in the eastern province of Van’s Başkale district.
The officers were part of the Başkale Anti-smuggling and Organized Crime Bureau and were returning to the police station from a drug operation when the accident occurred. The injured officers, Yetiş Ulaş and Mehmet Ongol, were taken to a Van hospital via helicopter.

A memorial ceremony was held in front of the Başkale Police Department for deceased officers Ramazan Arslan and Ersin Yılmaz. Van Police Chief Şükrü Rafet Mert, Van Governor Münir Karaoğlu, police officers, the deceased officers’ families and Van residents attended the ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, Van Police Chief Mert offered his condolences to the families and the police department. “Officers Yılmaz and Arslan were killed in a deplorable accident,” he said.

The wives of Arslan and Yılmaz, who are both pregnant, shed tears while embracing the coffins of their husbands. Yılmaz will be buried in an Ankara cemetery while Arslan will be buried in Samsun.
