Fugitive businessman Uzan receives 23-year prison sentence

Cem Uzan
16 April 2010 / TODAY'S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
An İstanbul court sentenced embattled businessman Cem Uzan to 23 years in prison yesterday. The İstanbul 7th High Criminal Court sentenced Uzan to 23 years in prison for establishing an organization to commit a crime, being a member of said organization, forgery of official and private documents and aggravated fraud and bribery. He was also ordered to pay TL 33,750 in legal fees.

Cases concerning Kemal Uzan, Yavuz Uzan, Hakan Uzan, Hüseyin Engin Saydam, Mustafa Düzgünce and Cenk Ali Türkan, for whom the court had previously issued arrest warrants, will be heard later since they did not submit their defenses in a hearing where a total of 29 suspects were tried.

Uzan, who once owned Turkey’s second-largest mobile telephone company as well as some banks, did not attend Thursday’s trial because he is living in France and seeking asylum there. It is not known whether Turkey will seek Uzan’s extradition from France, which is considering his asylum request. Earlier, he was convicted on separate fraud charges and sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison, a verdict he is appealing.
