Import models dominated the number of automobiles sold during the first three months of the year, at roughly 70 percent, while local models accounted for more than half of all light commercial vehicles sold during the same period, a recent survey has shown.

According to data released by the Automotive Distributors Association (ODD), the automotive sector saw the number of motor vehicles sold rising by 6.82 percent in the January-March period compared to a year earlier, up from 92,459 to 103,036. During the same period, a total of 67,203 automobiles were sold, representing a 1.59 percent drop, while light commercial vehicles enjoyed an increase of 27.19 percent in units sold, to 35,833.

Between the months of January and March, local models accounted for nearly 60 percent of overall motor vehicle sales, while import models dominated number of automobiles sold. Light commercial vehicle sales, however, saw local models enjoying the highest share in total sales, a trend similar to that of last year.

In automobiles, import models amounted to nearly 70 percent of units sold in the first three months of the year, at 46,589 units sold, while 20,614 locally produced automobiles were sold during the same period. With 7,202 automobiles sold in the first quarter of 2010, Germany’s Volkswagen accounted for the highest sales in Turkey.
