Team New Zealand will compete in sailing’s 2011 Volvo Ocean Race and expects former America’s Cup-holders Alinghi to also take part.
Team New Zealand -- which held the America’s Cup from 1995 until it was won by Switzerland’s Alinghi in 2003 -- will contest the 2011-2012 round the world race under Spanish sponsorship, team boss Grant Dalton said on Tuesday. The Team New Zealand entry will be sponsored by the Spanish footwear company Camper and its race yacht would be called Camper, Dalton said. The 2011 Volvo Ocean Race starts from the Spanish port of Alicante in Oct. 2011 and finishes at Galway, Ireland in June 2012 with stopovers in South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, China, New Zealand, Brazil, the United States, Portugal and France. Team New Zealand brings to five the number of confirmed entries for the Volvo race, along with Puma Ocean Racing of the United States, France’s Groupama, Italy’s Italia 70 and a team from Abu Dhabi.
