Sivasspor shows staying power in Super League

Maybe, just maybe, Sivasspor was destined to drop this season after the club management sold almost all the players after the team barely missed out on the Turkcell Super League championship last season.
But after coach Mesut Bakkal took over the helm on March 24, Sivasspor seems to be putting up a good fight against gravity.

On Monday night, Bakkal’s men held Kayserispor to a 2-2 away draw in their week 29 match at the Kadir Has Stadium in a game where no one gave Sivasspor the slightest chance. But Sivas defied all odds.

Buenos Aires-born Franco Dario Cangele converted a penalty in the 32nd minute to put Kayserispor up 1-0, but Sivasspor got lucky when an own goal by 30-year-old defender Aydın Toscalı in the 45th minute gave them the equalizer just before halftime.

Goal machine Ariza Makukula again gave Kayserispor the lead in the 58th minute when he redirected a free kick by Cangele into the back of the net. But Sivasspor captain-striker Mehmet Yıldız, who was sidelined due to injury for most of the season’s first half, converted a penalty six minutes before fulltime (84th) to settle the score: Kayserispor 2, Sivasspor 2.

The draw came exactly one week after Sivasspor snatched a last-gasp 1-1 draw with the Galatasaray Lions in their week 28 match at the Sivas 4 Eylül Stadium.

Bakkal seemed very happy with the play and the result. “We are on the right track,” the visibly relieved coach said. “And if we continue to show this kind of determination in the remaining [five] matches, we will definitely avoid the drop,” Bakkal added.

Ankaraspor has already been relegated by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) over shady deals, and doomed Denizlispor will also very likely be doing business in the Bank Asya League 1 (second division) next season.

Since three teams will be relegated, the big question now is, “Who will complete the relegation list?”

“Not us,” Bakkal and his Sivas lads say.
