Signing the condolence book at the Polish Embassy in Ankara, Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan said Turkey feels great sorrow for the death of Kaczynski, a “distinguished leader and friend of Turkey,” while adding that all flags in Turkey will fly at half-mast to honor the late Polish president and his wife. “During his leadership, Kaczynski did much to improve relations between Turkey and Poland. He will always be remembered with great respect and gratitude. I believe his legacy will continue to brighten the future of Poland,” Babacan wrote in the condolence book.
Body of newborn baby found in trash container
KAYSERİ The body of a newborn baby was found in a trash container in Kayseri’s Melikgazi district on Monday. According to news reports, two people who were looking for things to sell in the trash bin found the baby’s body and immediately reported it to the police. Police officers came to the scene and have launched an investigation into the death. The body was taken to Erciyes University Medical School Hospital for an autopsy.
Young man attempts armed robbery in Antalya
ANTALYA Cihan Özdemir attempted to commit armed robbery on a bank in Antalya on Monday. As soon as Özdemir (18) entered the bank in the Teomanpaşa neighborhood, he opened fire. The young man, who was wearing a ski mask, held Suzi Dikmenoğlu, a customer in the bank as a hostage. After Burak Kunduhoğlu, the security guard at the bank, realized that Özdemir’s handgun was a fake, he subdued the young man with the help of other customers. Özdemir was taken to a police station in Antalya.
Man drowns while rescuing his dog
İSTANBUL Mehmet Üner drowned off the coast of İstanbul’s Sarıyer district on Sunday night while trying to rescue his dog, which had fallen into the water. According to news reports, Üner (62) was out for a walk with his dog Dost when it suddenly fell into the water at Keçiburnu in Sarıyer. As soon as Üner saw his dog flailing about in the sea, he tried to rescue it; however, he lost his balance and also fell in to the water and drowned. Üner’s body was taken to Sarıyer İsmail Akgün State Hospital. An investigation into the incident has been launched by the police.
Convicted arsonist sentenced to 14 years in prison
İSTANBUL Judges handed down a prison sentence of 14 years, seven months for Sabri Deniz, who was accused of setting 11 vehicles on fire in İstanbul in 2007. Deniz and his attorney, Nermin Selçuk, were both present at a hearing at the 9th İstanbul High Criminal Court. According to news reports, Deniz cooperated with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and engaged in the arson attacks at the behest of the terrorist organization. Deniz attempted to set 11 vehicles on fire, including police cars, in İstanbul’s Küçükçekmece district but only succeeded at setting three of them on fire.
