Türksat to sign contracts for two new satellites
Following Türksat’s call for international bidders for the production of the Türksat 4A and 4B satellites, three companies from Asia, America and Europe submitted bids. Türksat General Director Özkan Dalbay said they plan to sign a contract with the winning bidder in June.
He said the new satellites are expected to be completed in 26 months and launched in the forth quarter of 2012. He also said the new satellites will have a lifespan of 20 years, with 4A covering Africa and 4B covering Asia. Dalbay said 4A will be used for satellite television broadcasts while 4B would be used for Internet services, data transfer and live broadcasts.
“Our requirements for the 4B satellite include the Ka band because this frequency band will allow us to provide inexpensive Internet services to Turkey, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus [KKTC], Iraq, Azerbaijan and Afghanistan,” the Anatolia news agency quoted Dalbay as saying.
Türksat will also open a tender for the launch of the satellites, Dalbay said, adding that the tender will take place in July. “We plan to complete that tender process in November or December,” he said.
The new satellites will be Turkey’s last foreign-made satellites because the construction of Turkey’s National Satellite Production Center will start in June. Dalbay said the facility will be able to produce satellites up to five tons in weight.
He noted that 30 Turkish engineers will take part in the production of the Türksat 4A and 4B satellites, in accordance with the requirements of the articles and conditions of the bid. “Those engineers will later produce our national satellites,” he said.
Türksat is also engaged in talks with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), seeking a larger orbit spectrum assignment.
