The Ankara Police Department is still hot on the trail of the e-mailer, code-named “mehmetali,” who has sent several e-mails regarding the truck, which was stopped by police following the tip-off. The third of a string of e-mails the individual sent to police has been determined to have originated in Ankara, from a wireless Internet network belonging to one İsmail Y. The reproachful e-mail began by saying, “It was a mistake to let the truck go,” a reference to four more trucks that the informant had said in earlier e-mails were headed toward İstanbul and allegedly “let go” by police forces.
The e-mail also says there are plans to assassinate a top-level statesman; as part of the investigation into these claims, police performed a raid on the site of the Internet connection the e-mails were sent over. Accountant İsmail Y., who resides in the Çankaya district’s Yıldızevler neighborhood, was taken into custody; the 50-year-old married father of two says he sent no such e-mail. A police examination of İsmail Y.’s computer produced no leads, and police say it’s likely the tipster just used the man’s wireless network. However, as this means proximity to İsmail Y.’s residence, police believe that the individual they are searching for is in the area.
The latest e-mail from “mehmetali” included the following: “A game is being played against Turkey by giving civilians the identity card of an active duty officer. Efforts will be made to pit the police and General Staff against one another; this will be supported by documents. The General Staff itself will produce these documents and inform the police about them. Turkey will be bought to the brink of no return. Sectarian and religious conflict will begin amongst the public. [Kurdistan Workers’ Party] PKK sympathizers will take advantage of the occasion of Nevruz and carry out [terror] acts in the streets, weakening the administration’s power. Special forces will be withdrawn from İmralı, and further action plans will be conducted [to free jailed PKK leader Abdullah] Öcalan. Two weeks later, a high-ranking state employee will be assassinated. The documents are valid; everything must be researched. This will all be accomplished by fake officers.”
