Military returns original copy of plot to civilian prosecutors

6 April 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
The original copy of a controversial military plot, which was sent to the General Staff’s Military Prosecutor’s Office for examination in February, was returned to the İstanbul  Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office yesterday.

Titled the Action Plan to Fight Reactionaryism, the plot was reportedly drafted by Col. Dursun Çiçek and suggests that the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) made systematic preparations to damage the image of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government and the faith-based Gülen movement in the eyes of the public, to play down the Ergenekon investigation and to garner support for members of the military arrested as part of the Ergenekon inquest. Ergenekon is a clandestine criminal organization accused of working to overthrow the government.

Following tests conducted by the İstanbul Council of Forensic Medicine (ATK), the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) and the İstanbul Police Crime Laboratory, the Gendarmerie General Command’s Criminal Investigation Department has also confirmed the authenticity of the document.

The İstanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office last month turned down a request by the Military Prosecutor’s Office to allow it to conduct a series of chemical tests on the plot to check whether the fingerprints on the document actually match those of Col. Çiçek. Civilian prosecutors at the office said such tests would damage the document and asked the Military Prosecutor’s Office to return the document to them immediately.

In the meantime, reports said that an indictment concerning Col. Çiçek was still in progress and the investigation into the plot was continuing.
