According to news reports, Nazlıcan Toprak argued with her husband and then attempted suicide by taking her husband’s medication because she was depressed due to family problems. After Toprak realized that Nazlıcan had ingested his pills, he called the emergency helpline for an ambulance. Toprak’s young wife was rushed to İstinye State Hospital where her stomach was pumped and was later released.Seventy-one-year-old businessmen Toprak married Nazlıcan on July 18, 2009 at one of the businessman’s summer homes in Kuşadası. Toprak’s new wife was required to present the authorities written permission from her parents as she was not legally allowed to wed of her own accord until the age of 18.
The marriage was reportedly a surprise to Toprak’s family, especially to his ex-wife, Ayşe Toprak, the mother of 10 of his 12 children. Toprak experienced a dramatic blow to his business in August when the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF) seized 20 of his companies.
Toprak has been in the news following his controversial marriage. Two months ago, Toprak said he regretted marrying 17-year-old Nazlıcan because the marriage has brought shame to his name. Toprak previously noted that Nazlıcan is also unhappy as she is influenced by her mother. “Nazlıcan’s family says: ‘We chose you [Halis Toprak] because you had planes, helicopters and yachts. They are all gone. You are worse than us now.’ Nazlıcan also said had she known all this would happen [the TMSF seizure], she would not have married me,” Toprak added.
Aysel Duruk, one of the daughters of Toprak, said they were always aware of the fact that Nazlıcan and his father are not a good couple because there is a 54-year age difference between them. “My siblings and I always noted that this marriage would not last because of various problems. If they had listened to us, this incident [Nazlıcan’s suicide attempt] would not have happened. Fortunately, Nazlıcan is now in good condition,” Duruk stated.
