Future of comprehensive deal on Cyprus in doubt, Talat says

2 April 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
There has not been a comprehensive deal to reunify the divided island of Cyprus yet and the possibility of whether any peace accord is attainable in the future is in doubt, the president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) has said.

Speaking at a press conference on the status of peace talks with Greek Cyprus on Thursday, KKTC President Mehmet Ali Talat and his team painted a mostly bleak picture of the developments in the talks with Greek Cypriot leader Dimitris Christofias.

Lawyers said that except for the topics of the judiciary and adaptation of the KKTC’s economy to EU standards, there have not been any subjects where sides have been able reach an agreement.

Asked about the progress of the talks, Talat said they need to reach to an agreement on every issue. “We have not agreed on every issue and there is no guarantee that we ever will,” Talat said. He was speaking one day after he and Greek Cypriot leader Christofias made a joint statement on the progress of the reunification talks they have been holding since September 2008.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry welcomed the joint statement of the island’s leaders and said that Turkey earnestly wishes that the ongoing process achieves a just and lasting settlement of the Cyprus issue in line with the established UN parameters and the leaders’ joint statement as soon as possible and will continue to support this aim with goodwill and determination.
