Tobacco and alcohol consumption feeds tax revenues

1 April 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Tobacco and alcohol consumption is leading to sizeable tax revenues for the government, with more than 40 percent of all Special Consumption Tax (ÖTV) income coming from these two groups alone during the first two months of the year.

According to data from the Finance Ministry, out of the TL 8.2 billion in ÖTV tax revenues collected in the first two months of the year, 40 percent, or TL 3.2 billion, was derived from tobacco goods and alcohol. Out of total tax revenues of TL 33.4 billion, 9.6 percent came from these two groups. The amount of taxes collected on alcoholic beverages was 12.7 percent higher than at the end of 2009, while tobacco revenues increased by 64 percent due to tax increases specifically on tobacco. For February alone, tobacco ÖTV revenues increased by 104.4 percent.

In 2009 the Finance Ministry collected TL 13.7 billion in taxes from alcohol and tobacco items, 7.93 percent of total tax revenues. The two groups made up 31.4 percent of all ÖTV income in 2009. The ministry hopes to collect TL 2.1 billion from ÖTV on alcohol this year, and has achieved 17.6 percent of this in the first two months of the year. For tobacco, this figure was 17.4 percent.
