Domestically produced handies sell out in first week

30 March 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, ANKARA
Turkish cell phone maker General Mobile is enjoying “more than anticipated” interest following the recent introduction to the market of its domestically produced cell phone, company manager Muzaffer Gölcü told the Anatolia news agency on Monday in Ankara.

The company introduced the DST 500 model, the first-ever cell phone to be produced in Turkey, to the market last week. Gölcü said the new cell phone sold out within a week after being released. “We have surpassed imported cell phones when it comes to sales performance,” he said, adding that the company has begun to manufacture two new models, Q 100 and DST 800, and expects to introduce them to Turkish customers by the end of April.

General Mobile plans to sell around 350,000 domestically produced cell phones in 2010, Gölcü noted, adding that the company has set as its goal the sale of 1 million units in 2011.
