Turkish runner Elvan honored with World Fair Award

29 March 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Turkish middle distance runner Elvan Abeylegesse was presented with the Pierre de Coubertin World Fair Play Trophy in the Hungarian city of Pecs on Saturday.
Elvan was awarded with the trophy for lending one of her rivals, Ethiopia’s Meselech Melkamu, a spare pair of her spikes ahead of the 10,000-meter race in the World Athletics Championships final in Berlin in 2009.

Melkamu, who came second in the event, had left her spikes in the hotel room. Elvan, a two-time Olympic 10,000-meter silver medalist, dropped out of the race due to injury. “I have no regrets about what I did. I would do the same thing again,” she told reporters.
