Members of the pro-democracy NGO, which has garnered increased recognition in the last few years for its firm stance against antidemocratic moves and endeavors still present in Turkey, started the race in front of the CHP headquarters amidst astonished stares of party officials, and after riding in vehicles during some parts of the race, passed the finish line at the Constitutional Court. Titled the “First Traditional Folder-Carrying Footrace from the CHP [Headquarters] to the Constitutional Court,” the race was attended by tens of youngsters.Group members read a statement before they set off and detailed the reasons for their protest deriding the CHP. “We are organizing this footrace to find quality staff for the CHP, which has run to the Constitutional Court following every constitutional change and which is presently awaiting busy days for the same reason. The winner will have a great advantage for being employed by the party,” they said. The CHP has applied to the Constitutional Court 36 times since 2007 during the term of the last Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government. The party has vowed to bring the government’s newly announced reform package, which has received wide appreciation both from within Turkey and outside the country with the prospect of further democratizing Turkey, to the top court as well.
Following the race, winner Tarık Beyhan said he would do his best to earn the CHP’s respect. “I will carry many folders to impede the functioning of Parliament and to earn the CHP’s respect,” he said. The group peacefully dispersed after the protest.
