The Ankara Police Department’s Organized Crime Unit raided the house of Hakan A., who runs a gym in Ankara’s Yenimahalle district, based on instructions from İstanbul prosecutors on Monday. According to news reports on Wednesday, Hakan A. was captured by police as he tried to escape through the apartment’s ventilation shaft. A large number of handwritten notes and computers were seized during the search of the house. Hakan A., who mildly injured his ankle as he jumped into the air shaft, was taken to a hospital. Another person, identified as Hayri B., who reportedly resides in İstanbul, was also detained in Ankara. The police are looking for a third person identified as Cazim A. The two detainees were flown to İstanbul after detention procedures were completed.
Hablemitoğlu was shot dead in front of his house on Dec. 18, 2002, and the assassin has not yet been captured. Prosecutors carrying out the investigation into Ergenekon, a clandestine gang charged with plotting to overthrow the government, have found links between the gang and several unresolved shootings, including Hablemitoğlu’s assassination.
