Elazığ rocked by 5.1 magnitude quake

25 March 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
The eastern province of Elazığ that was shaken by a 6-magnitude earthquake in early March was rocked yesterday by another earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1.

The epicenter of the quake, which hit at 4:12 p.m., was Elazığ’s Palu district, İstanbul’s Kandilli Observatory seismology center said. The tremors of the quake were felt in other parts of the province as well as in Bingöl and Tunceli.

There were no immediate reports of death or damage. The first quake, which hit on March 8, claimed the lives of 41 people who mostly lived in mud-brick houses. The high death toll from the first earthquake in Elazığ despite the magnitude of the quake being below 7 was considered by many to be due to the construction of adobe buildings, which are prevalent in the region. Many experts also said a high-magnitude quake has long been expected along the East Anatolian fault line and complained that their warnings had been ignored.
