Customs to switch to online database next month

23 March 2010 / FATIH KARAKILIÇ, BURSA
Eighteen border crossings in Turkey are preparing to switch to an online operation system as of April 1. Following the ongoing modernization and infrastructure studies, which started in October 2009, the 18 border crossings will transform their database into a comprehensive digital environment.

The project expects to provide a faster and easier service at border checkpoints. Exporter and importer firms will be able to apply to the checkpoint centers online 12 to 24 hours ahead of their pass. With the new system, a truck or a ship will be able to finish its customs process and pass through within one day.

Bursa Customs Manager Tevfik Usta told Today’s Zaman Monday that the border crossings are fully integrated with the new system and are ready to switch to the new program. Usta said the new system will abolish paperwork completely as well as providing high security at customs. The manager said the system will keep data on every single operation in its logs so that related public institutions along with firms have access to them.
