The road is normally blocked due to snow from November to late May or early June. Locals were pleased with the good news coming from teams who managed to clear and open the road to transportation from downtown Van over the weekend. In the past people were forced to take another route that was 245 kilometers long, passing through Tatvan and Hizan, while the direct connection was blocked due to snow, a familiar occurrence in eastern Turkey during the winter season.Overseeing the final phases of the snow clearing, Van Governor Münir Karaloğlu said locals had two festivals this year because their road was opened, one being Nevruz, considered New Year’s and also the arrival of spring by many cultures particularly in the Middle East but also celebrated across Turkey.
“Expansion and blacktopping are still continuing here on the road, which was closed to transportation in late December of last year. This is the first time it has been reopened in March. We plan to permanently solve the transportation problem here with tunnel projects,” Karaloğlu said.
