Party closure case and constitutional amendment

22 March 2010 / MUSTAFA ÜNAL ZAMAN,
Some people expected a party closure on Friday. The claim regarding the party closure was not taken seriously in Ankara, but it garnered much attention. The economy was affected by this rumor of a party closure. The stock exchange was affected.
It is no secret that Supreme Court of Appeal Chief Prosecutor Abdurrahman Yalçınkaya completed the paperwork for a closure case against the Justice and Development Party (AK Party). It is also somewhat known what the file with regards to the part closure contains. Fortunately, the party closure rumors that took place ended in nothing. Otherwise, we would face an upside-down Turkey. Has the file been shelved completely? No. If we take into consideration that there is a trial in March, we can easily say that next Friday is critical. Undoubtedly, it is not an exaggeration if we say there is a direct connection between the constitutional amendment and the party closure. The AK Party is currently pursuing a radical solution. The party closure did not come to the agenda suddenly because it has a past. Yalçınkaya said it himself that he started an investigation into the AK Party. It is not good to discuss constitutional amendments under the threat of party closure. I hope Yalçınkaya won’t do something crazy.
