Karabükspor on verge of returning to Super League

22 March 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Black Sea side Kardemir Karabükspor is on the verge of returning to topflight Turkish soccer after beating Bucaspor 2-1 away in their top-of-table clash in the Bank Asya League 1 on Saturday.
The week 27 victory at the Yeni Buca Stadium means leader Kardemir Karabükspor now has 63 points, 11 more than second-placed Aegean side Bucaspor, which has garnered 52 with only seven weeks to go.

Striker Yunus Altun put Bucaspor 1-0 up after only two minutes, but goals by defender Yasin Avcı in the 32nd and midfielder Şenol Akın in the 87th meant Kardemir Karabükspor is very likely to be back in the Turkcell Super League after an 11-year hiatus. Kardemir Karabükspor played in topflight Turkish soccer in the 1993-1994 and 1997-1999 seasons. Ever since the Black Sea team has rarely come so close to finishing first and earning a promotion to the Super League.

The top two teams in the Bank Asya League 1 gain automatic advancement to the Super League at the end of the regular season in May.

The teams that finish third to sixth take part in a four-team promotion playoff at a venue that is chosen by the Turkish Soccer Federation (TFF). The third-place team plays the sixth, the fourth plays the fifth and the two winners clash in a one-leg final for the single Super League spot. As is known, the bottom three teams in the Turkcell Super League are relegated to the Bank Asya League 1.

Dardanelspor beat Kocaelispor 2-1 in the other Bank Asya League 1 match on Saturday.
