Retired Gen. Çetin Doğan, who was arrested last month in an investigation into a military plot named “Sledgehammer,” has been sent back to prison after an evaluation of his health complaints showed that they were not critical.

Doğan was sent to Silivri State Hospital on Thursday morning for complaints of heart troubles and a herniated disc. After being examined by a cardiologist and a brain surgeon, Doğan underwent tests. Doctors concluded that there was no urgent health risk facing Doğan and said there was no problem with sending Doğan back to prison.

The Sledgehammer plot, which was revealed earlier this year, included subversive plans to bomb heavily frequented mosques in İstanbul in an attempt to trigger chaos in the country to provide a pretext for military intervention. The plan led to a nationwide outcry, with many calling for the authorities to punish those behind it, while some voiced suspicions that the plan was fabricated to defame the military.
