Renowned Turkish soccer coach Tayfun Türkmen has assumed the duties as the new coach of Ghana Premier League side Heart of Lions.
Türkmen, who had previously trained Turkcell Super League teams Gençlerbirliği and Antalyaspor, was also the coach of Ghana’s All Stars club in 2007.

In an exclusive interview with the Anatolia news agency, Türkmen said: “I am responsible for the whole team Heart of Lions and their infrastructure. Ghana’s Premier League is one of the toughest in Africa. Our goal is to finish the season in the top three.”

“I am both honored and pleased to serve Heart of Lions. The directors and fans of Heart of Lions have immense love and respect for me. Aside from being the coach of Heart of Lions, I am also responsible for all technical investments. The national soccer team of Ghana had earlier invited me to coach their team. However, I could not accept this prestigious position as I was then coaching Antalyaspor. Working in Ghana is really special for me,” Türkmen further underlined.

The president of the Ghanaian Soccer Federation, Kwesi Nyantakyi, issued a statement in 2007 after Türkmen left the All Stars club.

“Tayfun Türkmen was the best and most professional coach ever to serve in Ghana. Türkmen made enormous contributions to Ghanaian soccer, and he is our honorary teacher and coach forever,” Nyantakyi said.

Soccer is the most popular sport in Ghana.

The Ghanaian national team will be taking part in the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa in the summer

Ghana is in Group D and will play against Germany, Australia and Serbia in the first round. Tickets for the Ghana-Germany game have already sold out although the tournament in South Africa will kick off on June 11.
