Another student hit by tram dies

19 March 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Buket Bulut, who was critically injured in a tram accident in İstanbul’s Güngören district just a week ago, died on Thursday afternoon. Even though the İstanbul Provincial Health Directorate announced on Monday that Bulut had been declared brain dead, Buket’s family remained hopeful and refused to shut down her life support systems.
The accident occurred on March 11 when a Bağcılar-Zeytinburnu tram hit students Denis Tekin, İrem Dinçsoy and Bulut near the Mehmet Akif tram stop. The students were immediately rushed to nearby hospitals, where Tekin and Dinçsoy died while undergoing treatment. Buket was transferred to the Bağcılar Teaching and Research Hospital in critical condition. İstanbul Education Department head Muammer Yıldız denied claims that the students were crossing the tracks to avoid a fight that had broken out in front of their school, the Kemal Hasoğlu High School.
