Poll: Soccer fans do not want Diyarbakırspor to be relegated

19 March 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
A poll by the Center for Social Research (Andy-Ar) has found that 52.4 percent of respondents do not want Diyarbakırspor to be relegated from the Turkcell Super League to the Bank Asya League 1.
Diyarbakırspor’s relegation from the league came to the agenda after acts of hooliganism disrupted two recent games. In its March 6 game against Bursaspor, Diyarbakırspor fans started throwing items onto the field during the 17th minute, leading to the cancellation of the game. Last weekend’s match against İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor at the İstanbul Olympic Stadium was called off in the 87th minute after a group of Diyarbakırspor fans threw objects onto the field and others invaded the pitch.

A total of 25.9 percent of respondents wanted Diyarbakırspor to be relegated while 21.7 percent said they were undecided on the issue. A majority of the respondents, 69.5 percent, said Diyarbakırspor’s relegation would create a negative atmosphere in Turkey while 17.3 disagreed and 13.2 said they had no idea.

A total of 1,377 people were surveyed, 53.9 percent of whom were men and 46.1 percent women, between March 16 and 18. Some 28.5 percent of respondents said they support Galatasaray while 25.2 were fans of Fenerbahçe, 20.5 percent of Beşiktaş, 6.8 percent of Trabzonspor and 18.6 percent of other teams. The poll aimed to find out the opinions of soccer fans as week 26 of the Turkcell Super League wrapped up.

The poll also revealed that 31.5 percent of respondents said they believed Galatasaray would be the champion of the Turkcell Super League while 25.9 percent said Bursaspor would finish the season on top. While 21.6 percent think Beşiktaş will be the champion, 18.3 percent believe Fenerbahçe will walk away victorious.
