Today is March 18

19 March 2010 / TOKTAMIŞ ATEŞ BUGÜN,
Today is the 95th anniversary of the victory at Gallipoli, which took place on March 18 1915, the day when one of the biggest fleets in the world was stopped and repelled. I wish our entire nation a happy day.
The Battle of Gallipoli had three very important results. The first one was that England was unable to support Russia through the Black Sea. As a result, Russian czarism collapsed. First the groundwork for a semi bourgeois revolution (Kerensky) and then a Bolshevik revolution was laid. (Is there anything more important in history than this?) The second result is the historical rise of the “Anafartalar hero Mustafa Kemal.” Mustafa Kemal, who prevented an unexpected Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) invasion in the Arıburnu area of Anafartalar during the Gallipoli land battles, became known as the “Anafartalar hero” across the country. In the end, this is a famous battle in the history of the ANZACs, and that is why they still visit Çanakkale.
