‘KKTC politicians, jurists disbelieve Ergenekon claims’

18 March 2010 / BILAL ŞAHIN, LEFKOŞA
National Unity Party (UBP) deputy Ahmet Çaluda has said politicians in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) agree with jurists that the allegations against Ergenekon, a clandestine criminal organization in Turkey which is accused of working to overthrow the government, are weak, implying that no such organization exists.

A commission was formed in the KKTC to examine shadowy incidents in the country. The commission has met four times thus far, but Çaluda’s remarks came as a strong indication of the position of the commission toward the clandestine organization.

“We are of the same opinion as the jurists, that claims against Ergenekon are not serious,” Çaluda remarked and alleged that the Ergenekon probe places KKTC Prime Minister Derviş Eroğlu and former President Rauf Denkaş under suspicion for membership in the gang.

“There cannot be such an illegal formation in the KKTC. This is what our jurists believe. We share the same idea as our jurists,” he noted.

Çaluda is believed to have strong ties with Mustafa Özbek, the chairman of workers’ union Türk Metal. Özbek was arrested last year on charges of financing the Ergenekon terrorist organization. “The commission should rapidly conclude its work. Our objective is to enlighten the public as soon as possible,” the deputy added.

UBP Secretary-General İrsen Küçük said the commission has no sound document or evidence to shape the future of its investigation into Ergenekon claims. “I cannot say whether those claims are true or false. We are continuing our work. We cannot say whether Ergenekon functioned in the KKTC before we conclude our work. It will make us happy if all those claims are proven wrong,” Küçük stated.

Democratic Party (DP) leader Serdar Denktaş, also a member of the commission, expressed his will for a rapid conclusion of the commission’s investigation into the Ergenekon case. “As the commission, we are doing our best to find all evidence and documents related to the case. Our aim is to reach a conclusion as soon as possible. Many people are being put under pressure unjustly. The commission should complete its work quickly in order to acquit those who are accused unjustly and punish all those who committed a crime,” Denktaş remarked.
