Turkey and Cameroon on Tuesday signed an agreement on mutual visa exemption for holders of official passports as well as a protocol on technical, scientific and economic cooperation. The visa exemption deal and the protocol were signed by visiting Turkish President Abdullah Gül and his Cameroonian counterpart, Paul Biya, in Yaounde.

Cameroon was the second leg of Gül’s Africa tour, which began on Sunday, after the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Gül was accompanied by State Ministers Selma Aliye Kavaf and Faruk Nafiz Özak, Industry & Trade Minister Nihat Ergün, businessmen and representatives of nongovernmental organizations.

While in Yaounde, Gül attended a meeting of the Turkish- Cameroon Business Forum, where he delivered a speech.

In his address Gül vowed that technical and humanitarian assistance to Cameroon from Turkey would continue while noting that the best way of helping a country in today’s world was by making joint investments and transferring technology and information.

The president said the world has a debt of humanity to Africa, as he noted that Turkey sees the problems of Africa as the problems of the world.

“The differences between the northern and southern hemispheres cannot continue to exist like this. While millions of children die and billions of people are deprived of drinking water, there will be no peace in the world,” he said, drawing applause from the audience.

The president said Turkey would continue to be the voice of Africa in international platforms.

Before his return to Turkey on Wednesday morning, Gül gathered with Turkish and Cameroonian businessmen at his hotel for breakfast.

He later visited the Turkish school in the country, where he was enthusiastically welcomed by Cameroonian students who sang Turkish songs.

Delivering a speech there Gül voiced his belief that the Turkish school would make an important contribution to the development of bilateral ties between Turkey and Cameroon.

“The best investment is the one made in education,” he said.

Gül later inaugurated a building at the Turkish Embassy in Yaounde and attended a reception hosted by Turkish Ambassador Atılay Ersan. Gül returned to Turkey yesterday.
