18 March 2010 / MUSTAFA ÜNAL ZAMAN,
The Democratic Republic of the Congo hosted a Turkish president for the first time in its history. President Abdullah Gül has made it his habit to visit Turkish schools in the countries he visits.
This visit was no exception. The Şafak Turkish School in Kinshasa is a new school, established only three years ago, yet it has more than 300 students. It will grow further. Massive construction work is under way. When completed, the number of students will increase in this magnificent building. The first thing that comes to mind in Africa is colonialism. While their mission is different, some may choose to view Turkish schools in this context. Indeed, President Gül was asked this and replied: “No, Turkish schools have not been opened with a colonial spirit or mentality. They intend to ensure fusion and brotherhood. In colonialism, on the other hand, you cannot find this spirit of brotherhood, but interest. I have seen older schools in Tanzania, and everyone was content with them.”
