Turkey to host rugby game between Russia and Georgia

17 March 2010 / THE ANATOLIA NEWS AGENCY, TRABZON
Final preparations are taking place for a rugby game to be played between Georgia and Russia as part of the European Nations Cup in Akçaabat town of north-eastern province of Trabzon at the weekend.

Residents of Trabzon, often known as die-hard fans of Super League team Trabzonspor, do not know much about rugby but are anxiously waiting for the rugby game between Georgia and Russia to be played at Akçaabat's Fatih Stadium.

The rugby game was initially planned to take place in Georgian capital city of Tbilisi. However, due to the tension between Georgia and Russia, the game will take place at a neutral venue in Akçaabat, Turkey.

Hundreds of Georgian fans have shown great interest in Saturday's game and most of them could not find tickets for the game whose tickets have been virtually sold out.

Interestingly, many Georgian fans are trying to rent out balconies of apartment flats from where the rugby game can be easily watched.

An Akçaabat home owner, Kadem Maruf, told the Anatolia news agency on Wednesday that "our fellow residents closely watch games and are experts on soccer. We do not yet know much about rugby. We will, God willing, witness a rugby game and enjoy it on Saturday".

Saturday's game will kick off at 15:00.
