Turkish minister: "Britain to help Turkey more in EU membership talks"

17 March 2010 / THE ANATOLIA NEWS AGENCY, LONDON
Turkish State Minister for foreign trade Zafer Çağlayan said that Britain promised to exert more efforts as a mediator to help Turkey overcome the obstacles during EU membership talks.

Attending a reception in London on Tuesday, Çağlayan said that Britain had been an important ally of Turkey and supporter of its EU membership bid from the beginning. He added that Britain had undertaken a serious mediation role in a number of issues during Turkey's EU membership talks.

Turkey recorded a serious progress in EU process, Çağlayan said. "However, currently, eight chapters are on hiatus due to Cyprus issue."

Çağlayan added that British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said they would extend every type of support to Turkey to overcome obstacles in EU process.
