Consumer confidence up 3.3 pct in February

17 March 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, ANKARA
Turkey’s consumer confidence index, which has showed signs of recovery since December, continued its upward movement in February, increasing by 3.3 percent over the previous month, though still indicating a slightly pessimistic outlook, recent data have revealed.

The Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) released its monthly consumer behavior report for February on Tuesday. According to the report, which was prepared in cooperation with the Central Bank of Turkey, the consumer confidence index hit 81.85 in February, increasing by 3.3 percent compared with January, when the index was 79.24. When the index is above 100, the consumer outlook is optimistic, when it is equal to 100, it is neither optimistic nor pessimistic and when it is below 100, the consumer outlook is pessimistic.

The report attributed the increase in consumer confidence to improvements in consumer assessments concerning their purchasing power in the coming period, the general economic outlook and job opportunities in the next quarter.
