Press Roundup

17 March 2010 / ,
A photo exhibition has been opened in the eastern province of Batman marking the 22nd anniversary of the Halabja poison gas attack. Forty-four photos showing the victims of the attack are on display.
Yeni Şafak: President Abdullah Gül, who flew to the Democratic Republic of the Congo with a group of businessmen on Sunday, said plots like “Sledgehammer,” which includes subversive plans to trigger chaos in the country with the ultimate goal of a military takeover, are unacceptable in a state of law, the daily reported in its main story yesterday. Terming the plot a “serious” matter, Gül demanded that institutions remove from their ranks people engaged in wrongdoing. He said the issue should be thoroughly investigated by prosecutors. “Those prosecutors are specially authorized. They are required to conduct a thorough investigation,” Gül said. “There could be wrongdoings in institutions. Those things happen, but they should be eliminated. That’s it.”

Star: “Roma lesson for Europe,” said the daily in the headline of a front-page article yesterday, quoting remarks from Hacer Foggo, a member of the Roma community who is also a member of the Sulukule Platform. Regarding Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s meeting with the Roma in İstanbul over the weekend and pledging better living standards for them, she said: “While some demand genocide of the Roma in some European countries and exclude their neighborhoods, Erdoğan gave a lesson of civilization to society.” Foggo, also a researcher, said there were some groups in Italy that demand genocide of the Roma, while the Roma neighborhoods are surrounded by walls in Slovakia. “Our prime minister meeting with the Roma in such an environment has set a good example for Europe. Roma people seemed to be proud of their identities,” she said.

Akşam: “One out of five people sacked,” the daily said in the headline of a front-page article yesterday, reporting that the unemployment rate in Turkey has reached 13.5 percent, increasing 0.4 points since last December. The official number of unemployed totals 3.3 million. More than 20 percent of those who are jobless were fired by their employers, while 10 percent found themselves without a job when their workplace closed down or went bankrupt, reported the daily.
