Puppets gear up for İstanbul gathering

17 March 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Puppet theater companies from Poland, Germany, Bulgaria, Japan, the Netherlands and France will be coming to İstanbul this weekend as the İstanbul International Puppet Festival launches its 13th edition on Sunday at the Garajistanbul performing arts center.
The festival, this year part of the İstanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture events, will run until March 27. The festival’s opening day will coincide with World Puppetry Day, declared by UNESCO in 2002. Marking this occasion, the Netherlands’ DudaPaiva Company will present their production “Morningstar” at Garajistanbul on the festival’s opening day, which will also see the opening of an exhibition of puppet designs from around the world at the Taksim metro station.

Turkish traditional shadow theater masters Tacettin Diker, Orhan Kurt and Metin Özlen will be honored during the opening gala at Garajistanbul.

Turkish acts scheduled to present their productions during the festival include Diker, Kurt, Özlen, the Anse Karagöz and Puppet Theater Company, the Kurmalı Salyangoz Puppet Theater Company and the Cengiz Özek Shadow Theater Company. Plays will be staged at the Muhsin Ertuğrul Theater, the French Cultural Center, Kukla İstanbul and Garajistanbul.
