Red Wings stretch advantage in playoffs

17 March 2010 / REUTERS, CALGARY
Tomas Holmstrom scored the winning goal late in the third period to keep the Detroit Red Wings ahead of the Calgary Flames in the race for the final NHL Western Conference playoff berth with a 2-1 victory on Monday.
Starting the day holding on to eighth place in the conference, the Red Wings stretched their advantage over the Flames to three points with late goals in the final two periods to overturn an early deficit. Pavel Datsyuk tied the game for Detroit (34-23-12) on his fifth goal in six contests, slamming home a wrist shot with 50 seconds remaining in the second. Calgary had taken an early advantage less than two minutes into the first period on Craig Conroy’s strike and the game appeared to be heading for overtime until Holmstrom netted with 1:19 remaining. Other NHL results: New Jersey 3, Boston 2 and Columbus 5, Edmonton 3.
