Hooligans trade jabs, high kicks in Denizli

A fistfight erupted outside the Denizli Atatürk Stadium after the Denizlispor-Beşiktaş week 25 Turkcell Super League match on Monday night.

For two weeks running, we have been writing nonstop about the unruly acts of Diyarbakırspor fans, culminating in the suspension of two matches in as many weeks.
The Denizlispor-Beşiktaş match on Monday night was not trouble-free either. The only difference was that the Denizli hooligans were wise enough not to misbehave inside the stadium itself, but outside.

Trouble started when Beşiktaş coach Mustafa Denizli, walking toward the conference hall in the Denizli Atatürk Stadium for his post-match news conference, was being cheered by several ecstatic Beşiktaş fans.

Irate Denizlispor, apparently angry because their team lost and is heading for the drop, started to insult the Beşiktaş supporters, who also responded in the same manner.

The verbal battle disintegrated into a wild free-for-all. Punches and high kicks flew, but the timely intervention of security forces prevented things from getting out of hand.

Meanwhile, the bus that was to take the Beşiktaş players to the airport was pelted with stones and the windows broken.

Hooliganism is rearing its ugly head again: Fan rowdiness erupted in Diyarbakır the Saturday before last, in İstanbul on Sunday and in Denizli on Monday.

Violence here, violence there, violence everywhere. Where, for goodness sake, is Turkish soccer heading?

Those responsible must do something NOW to stop this menace.
