Black Eagles keep up pressure on Lions, Crocs

Beşiktaş players celebrate after Slovakia striker Filip Holosko (below) scored the only goal of their Turkcell Super League match against the Denizlispor Roosters.

The Beşiktaş Black Eagles, the defending Turkcell Super League champions, needed an away victory, even by the slightest of margins, over the relegation-bound Denizlispor Roosters on Monday night to re-establish themselves as serious title contenders for this season’s championship.

And the Eagles did exactly that. Slovakia striker Filip Holosko’s goal during a goalmouth scramble after a Rodrigo Tello corner kick in the 41st minute was the only thing that separated the two teams. But the 1-0 victory was more than enough to move the Eagles up from third to fourth in the 17-strong league.

But Beşiktaş coach Mustafa Denizli was not a very happy man. And as he said in his post-match news conference, he was only happy with the score, but not at all with the play.

“Today, I can say we gave our opponent little or no chance, but I was not happy with the way we played,” he stated. “We earned three points, and that made us happy. But we have to improve our performance, and it must improve,” he further noted, adding, “Excitement certainly will be at its peak in the league’s remaining matches.”

Tight league race

With nine weeks remaining, the 2009-10 Turkcell Super League title race looks very likely to go down to the wire.

And with the recent resurgence of the Beşiktaş Black Eagles, the league title is turning into a three-horse race involving the season’s surprise team Bursaspor, Galatasaray and Beşiktaş. However, nine games mean 27 points, so it would be dead wrong to write off the self-destructive Fenerbahçe Yellow Canaries.

As the season heads down the home stretch, it is getting very tight at the top and every point counts. So no coach in his right state of mind wants to engage in unnecessary adventures.

Hence, sexagenarian Beşiktaş coach Denizli stuck to the starting XI that beat Abdullah Avcı’s İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor 2-0 in their make-up game last Wednesday in the match against the Roosters on Monday.

The only change Denizli made in the lineup was bringing in central defender İbrahim Kaş, who has served out his suspension, in place of 18-year-old Turkey U-19 sweeper Necip Uysal.

For the record: The 23-year-old Black Sea boy Kaş, who was born in the city of Karabük, is on loan from Spanish La Liga side Getafe CF.

As the old adage goes, one man’s fortune is another man’s misfortune. The Black Eagles kept their championship hopes alive but the opposite was the case for the struggling Denizlispor Roosters, whose survival hopes now hang by a thread.

Denizlispor coach Hakan Kulu therefore has his back against the wall. Rescuing his Roosters from their vegetative state seems like a tall order indeed.
